A Year After War’s End EOA Assists Afghans Seeking Safety

NEW YORK — A year after the end of the war in Afghanistan, Evacuate Our Allies (EOA) continues to work for the safety and security of at-risk Afghans.

“The end of an American military presence in Afghanistan was only a chapter in our connection with Afghanistan and the Afghan people,” said Seelai Karzai, Afghanistan Advocacy Campaign Manager for the Evacuate Our Allies Coalition at Human Rights First. “The first chapter of American military involvement extends more than the past 20 years; the next chapters are about how we continue building on our connection. We must continue efforts to relocate Afghans who are at risk in a country controlled by the Taliban and offer the permanent security of an Afghan Adjustment Act to those who resettle in the United States. As we mark this anniversary, Evacuate Our Allies will continue our work with the U.S. government, veterans groups, resettlement agencies, refugee advocates, Afghan American leaders, and others to see that this important responsibility is met.”

Earlier this month, Evacuate Our Allies hosted a press conference urging Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act (AAA). The act streamlines the immigration process for many Afghan nationals, especially those who supported the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. It will extend Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status to additional at-risk Afghans. The act also supports Afghan nationals outside the United States who meet the requirements for SIV status or U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) referrals.

Next week, the coalition will host Advocacy Days, bringing together over 500 participants with their Members of Congress asking for support for the AAA.
